Membres / Members: Naoto Shibata - Bass Eizo Sakamoto - Vocals Akio Shimizu - Guitars Hirotsugu Homma - Drums Présentation / Presentation: Formé en 1981, à Tokyo, au Japon, par le bassiste Naoto Shibata, Anthem est l'une des figures emblématiques de la scène heavy metal Nipponne. Leur premier enregistrement, la chanson " Warning Action ", ouvrait la fameuse compilation " Heavy Metal Force " parue sur Explosion Records sous la forme d'un 33 tours présenté dans une pochette en bois ! Il s'agit là du seul titre officiellement disponible avec leur chanteur original, Tony Maeda, remercié fin 1984 et vite remplacé par Eizo Sakamoto, juste avant que le groupe signe avec le label Nexus. En 1985, Anthem sort un premier album qui reçoit d'excellentes critiques dans son pays d'origine, mais aussi en Hollande (Aardschok), en Allemagne (Metal Hammer), en Grande Bretagne (Kerrang, Metal Forces) et même en France (Enfer Magazine, Metal Attack, Hard Force). Ce brillant démarrage est vite suivit en 1986 par l'agressif " Tightrope " qui place rapidement le quatuor comme l'un des plus sérieux espoirs en provenance du Japon où le paysage hard rock national est en pleine ébullition avec des noms tels que 44 Magnum, Sniper, Earthshaker, Rajas, Marino ou Bow Wow. Un an plus tard " Bound to Break ", produit par Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Malmsteen, Thin Lizzy…), confirme la popularité croissante d'Anthem à travers le monde. Leurs albums sont désormais disponibles en dehors du Japon tout d'abord sur Roadrunner et Black Dragon Records, puis sur Music for Nations en Europe et Meduza aux USA). A cette époque Anthem était sans aucun doute - avec bien évidemment leurs compatriotes de Loudness - le leader de la scène heavy metal japonaise. En 1987 ils donnent d'ailleurs quelques concerts à Los Angeles. L'un d'eux sera même enregistré et filmé, le 5 juin, au célèbre Country Club de Reseda (avec le Racer X de Paul Gilbert et Bruce Bouillet en première partie !) et réalisé en LP et VHS sous le titre " The Show Carries On ". Cet excellent document live montre à quel point la musique d'Anthem était puissante sur scène. Pourtant, assez soudainement, Eizo Sakamoto quitte le groupe (plus tard il sortira différents albums solo) pour être immédiatement remplacé par Yukio Morikawa. Après la réalisation " Gypsy Ways " en 88 et " Hunting Time " en 89, deux albums très " power metal " encore une fois produits par Chris Tsangarides, le guitariste original Hiroya Fukuda quitte à son tour ses partenaires en 1990, juste après la sortie de " No Smoke Without Fire ", un disque produit par Tony Taverner (Nazareth, Jeff Beck, Heavy Pettin…), sur lequel on trouve Don Airey (Ozzy, Osbourne, Rainbow, Gary Moore) derrière les claviers. Hideaki Nakama (ex-Hurry Scuary) rejoint alors le groupe le temps de quelques concerts, mais pour cause de divergences musicales, cette collaboration restera éphémère. Après une longue période d'auditions, c'est finalement un dénommé Akio Shimizu, alors tout juste âgé de 20 ans, qui rejoint les rangs d'Anthem en 1992 pour l'enregistrement du plus mélodique " Domestic Booty ". Malheureusement, en juillet, après plus de 10 ans d'une remarquable carrière, à l'occasion d'un ultime show, Anthem annonce officiellement sa séparation. Quelques mois plus tard, ce concert d'adieux sera disponible en CD sous le titre " Last Anthem ", qui est aujourd'hui un collector extrêmement difficile à trouver. Après le split, Naoto Shibata compose des musiques (souvent vendues sous forme de compilations) illustrant des combats de catch (un sport très populaire au Japon) et rejoint Loudness pour un live et trois albums studios - " Loud 'n Raw " (95), " Ghetto Machine " (97), " Dragon " (98), " Engine " (99) - et plusieurs tournées et festivals dont le Dynamo Open Air, à Eindhoven en Hollande. Il est aussi le principal musicien atour duquel s'articule le second volet du projet " Stand Proud! ", une impressionnante réunion de plusieurs acteurs la scène metal japonaise issues de groupes tels que Flatbacker, Blaze, Loudness, Precious, Dead End, Gargoyle ou Vow Wow, qui reprennent ensemble des classiques de Gary Moore, Hughes & Thrall, Thin Lizzy, Rainbow ou UK pour n'en citer que quelques uns. Aussi surprenant que cela puisse paraître, huit ans après son dernier concert, Anthem fait un come-back retentissant avec " Heavy Metal Anthem ", un album sur lequel le groupe réenregistre complètement les principaux titres de son répertoire avec un certain Graham Bonnet, le légendaire front man de Rainbow, MSG, Alcatrazz, Impellitteri, au chant. Le succès de ce disque (leur premier pour JVC / Victor Entertainment au Japon), pousse Naoto Shibata et Akio Shimizu à composer un véritable nouvel album. Enregistré en Californie et disponible en 2001, " Seven Hills ", mixé par Danny McClendon (Tesla), marque le retour du chanteur Eizo Sakamoto ainsi que l'arrivée d'un nouveau batteur Hirotsugu Homma (ex-E.Z.O, Loudness). Le triomphe de la courte tournée qui suit, montre à quel point Anthem est resté populaire dans les cœurs de ses fans. C'est sans doute pourquoi l'intégralité des albums studios du groupe est rééditée sous la forme de " remasters " avec en prime la version complète de " The Show Carries On! ", désormais disponible en double CD avec huit titres supplémentaires. Les amateurs les plus acharnés peuvent aussi essayer de trouver un coffret baptisé " Official Bootleg ", où ils découvriront avec joie d'anciens enregistrements live datant de 1986 à 1992, différentes versions démo et autres titres inédits, ainsi qu'un DVD bourré d'images live vintage. Il est aussi intéressant de noter qu'en 2001 Naoto Shibata demande au producteur suédois Fredrik Nordström (In Flames, HammerFall, Arch Enemy…) de remixer des titres incontournables comme " Wild Anthem ", " Tightrope Dancer ", " Bound to Break " ou " Silent Child " pour une sorte de best of très attractif intitulé " Anthem Way ". A nouveau plein d'énergie, Anthem n'arrête pas de travailler et sort " Overload " en 2002. Comme par le passé, c'est Chris Tsangarides qui se charge du mixage. Le très long " Overload Tour 2003 " offre au groupe l'opportunité de filmer et d'enregistrer quelques shows qui serviront de base au CD " Live Melt Down, " ainsi qu'au DVD " Live Melt Down - the Show Still Carries On ". 20 ans après les débuts discographiques du groupe, 2004 marque la sortie de " Eternal Warrior ", le dixième album studio d'Anthem! Pour célébrer cet anniversaire le groupe décide de donner 3 concerts bien particuliers. D'un soir à l'autre ils jouent, dans l'ordre, l'intégralité des titres de l'un de leurs trois premiers albums. Quelques mois plus tard le coffret (très rare) " Prologue Live Boxx " sera l'ultime témoignage de ces soirées exceptionnelles. Anthem part ensuite sur les routes pour une véritable tournée anniversaire sur laquelle ils invitent d'anciens membres à les rejoindre. L'un de ces concerts historiques est filmé pour le DVD " Anthem 20th Anniversary Tour 2005 " qui, en 27 titres et plus de 3 heures de son et d'images, est un impressionnant résumé d'un parcours exemplaire. En août 2006, plus fort que jamais, Anthem sort " Immortal ", son onzième album studio. Uniquement disponible au Japon, ce disque est sans aucun doute l'un des meilleurs de leur carrière. Fort d'une impressionnante production signée Naoto Shibata et d'un mix sans faille de Chris Tsangarides, " Immortal " est ahurissant de puissance. L'excellente performance vocale d'Eizo Sakamoto est soutenue par les constantes attaques de guitares d'Akio Shimizu. Alors que de nombreuses formations des 80's s'essoufflent après trop d'années passées dans le circuit, avec " Immortal " Anthem retrouve une seconde jeunesse et soutient aisément la comparaison avec des formations beaucoup plus jeunes. Récemment signé sur Replica Records, qui sortira enfin " Immortal " en Europe le 29 octobre prochain, Naoto Shiata et Anthem sont plus qu'heureux qu'un " autre public " puisse à nouveau apprécier leur musique… En effet, aucun disque du groupe n'avait été distribué en dehors du Japon depuis 1990 et " No Smoke Without Fire ". Soulignons que la version européenne d' " Immortal " sera disponible en édition limitée avec en bonus le DVD " Anthem 20th Anniversary Tour 2005 " ! Un beau cadeau de retour pour le public du Vieux Continent pour qui il est plus que temps de (re)découvrir cette légende du heavy Metal " made in Japan ". Une légende bien vivante qui bientôt partagera l'affiche du prestigieux Loud Park Festival avec d'autres monstres tels que Heaven & Hell, Marilyn Manson, Blind Guardian, Saxon, Therion ou Trivium, les 20 et 21 Octobre prochains au Saitama Super Arena dans la banlieue de Tokyo. Anthem was formed by bassist Naoto Shiata in 1981, in Tokyo / Japan. Their first official recording "Warning Action" was the opening track of the famous "Heavy Metal Force" compilation (a collector vinyl available under a wood sleeve (!!!) on Explosion Records). So far it's the only tune available with their original singer Tony Maeda, who left the band late 1984 just before their major record label debut. Anthem released their first self titled album in '85 which received rave reviews in their homeland as well as in some countries like Holland (Aardschok), Germany (Metal Hammer), UK (Kerrang, Metal Forces) and even France (Enfer Magazine, Metal Attack, Hard Force). This brilliant start was soon followed in 1986 by the aggressive "Tightrope" which quickly placed the gang as one of the brightest hopes coming from Japan. A year later, "Bound to Break" was produced by Chris Tsangarides (Judas Priest, Malmsteen, Thin Lizzy…) and confirmed the growing popularity of Anthem all over the world. Their albums were now released outside of Japan (first on Roadrunner, Black Dragon, then Music for Nations in Europe and on Meduza in the USA). At this point Anthem was without any doubt - together with Loudness - the leading Japanese metal band of the 80's! In 1987 they even performed a couple of shows in Los Angeles. One of them was recorded and filmed at the famous Country Club in Reseda on June 5th (with Racer X as opening act) and released as "The Show Carries On" album and video. This incredible live recording showed how powerful Anthem was on stage. However, vocalist Eizo Sakamoto suddenly left the band (he later recorded a few solo efforts) but was immediately replaced by Yukio Morikawa. After releasing high quality power metal albums as "Gypsy Ways" in '88 and "Hunting Time" in '89 (both again produced by Chris Tsangarides), original guitar player Hiroya Fukuda left the band right after the release of the successful "No Smoke Without Fire" (1990), an album produced by Tony Taverner (Nazareth, Jeff Beck, Heavy Pettin…) and with Don Airey (Ozzy, Osbourne, Rainbow, Gary Moore) as guest keyboards player. After many auditions which took much time, 20 years old Akio Shimizu joined Anthem in 1992 for the recording of the more melodic "Domestic Booty". This line-up didn't last long either and after over a remarkable decade full of heavy metal, Anthem played its last show in July '92, after the official announcement of their breakup. This final show was recorded and later released on CD under the title "Last Anthem". A after the split, Naoto Shibata composed some musics for some wrestling compilations and then joined Loudness for one live and three studio albums - "Loud 'n Raw" (95) "Ghetto Machine" (97), "Dragon" (98), "Engine" (99) - and several tours. He was also the leading musician on the second volume of the "Stand Proud!" project, an impressive reunion of several Japanese players coming from bands as Flatbacker, Blaze, Loudness, Precious, Dead End, Gargoyle or Vow Wow, who covered classics from Gary Moore, Hughes & Thrall, Thin Lizzy, Rainbow or UK to name a few. Unexpectedly, height years after their last concert, Anthem made an interesting come back with "Heavy Metal Anthem", a self cover album recorded with nothing less than the legendary Graham Bonnet (Rainbow, MSG, Alcatraz, Impellitteri) on vocals. The success of this album (their first for JVC / Victor Entertainment in Japan), which features 10 brand new recordings of songs taken of their seven first albums, pushed Naoto Shibata and Akio Shimizu to go to California to finally record a reunion album. Available in 2001, "Seven Hills", mixed by Danny McClendon (Tesla), welcomes on board former singer Eizo Sakamoto as well as new drummer Hirotsugu Homma (ex-E.Z.O, Loudness). This new album was followed by a short Japanese tour which clearly showed how the band was still popular in the hearts of the metal fans in the land of rising sun. That's maybe why Anthem's preview label decided to start to re-release some re-mastered versions of the entire back catalogue including a highly recommended complete version of the "The Show Carries On!" available as double CD with 8 additional songs! The die hard fans can also try to find the "Official Bootleg" triple discs box set, where they will enjoy one CD full of old live recordings (from 1986 to 1992), backed with another CD which presents some demos and previously unreleased tracks, plus a DVD which summarize the first part of the band's career through various video footage. It is also interesting to note that in 2001 Naoto Shibata also asked Swedish producer Fredrik Nordström (In Flames, HammerFall, Arch Enemy…) to remix 10 of the band's classics as "Wild Anthem", "Tightrope Dancer", "Bound to Break" or "Silent Child" for a kind of greatest hits album entitled "Anthem Ways". Again full of energy, the band decided to keep on working actively and released "Overload" in 2002. As in the past, Chris Tsangarides took over the mixing operations. The extensive "Overload Tour 2003" offered to the band an opportunity to record and to film a few shows. So a live album, "Live Melt Down," as well as a live DVD, "Live Melt Down - the Show Still Carries On," were soon released. 20 years after their recording debut, 2004 saw the release of "Eternal Warrior", the very intense 10th studio album of Anthem! To celebrate this 20th anniversary the band played three special shows named "Prologue" where, from one night to another, they performed each of their three first albums in their original track listing order. These special concerts were released the same year under a limited 3 CD box set, the extremely rare "Prologue Live Boxx". Then they went on the road for a "real" Anniversary Tour featuring several former members. One of these historic gig was filmed for the "Anthem 20th Anniversary Tour 2005" DVD which became a comprehensive compilation (27 tracks, almost 140 minutes of music!) of their entire career. In August 2006, stronger than ever, Anthem released "Immortal", their 11th studio album, in Japan and South East Asia only. It is maybe one of their finest works to date. Backed by an impressive production signed Naoto Shibata and an excellent mix of Chris Tsangarides, the vocal performances of Eizo Sakamoto are just incredible as well as the constant guitar attacks of Akio Shimizu. Although many bands often lose momentum after so many years in the circuit, Anthem still has The (Heavy Metal) Force to compete with many new comers and continues to aim high. That's why they have recently signed a European license deal with French label Replica Records which will finally release "Immortal" in Europe late September 2007. In France as well as in Germany, UK, Netherlands and several other countries, the initial version of this outstanding album will be available together with the "Anthem 20th Anniversary Tour 2005" as a bonus DVD! A great gift for the European audience who has not seen a domestic release of an Anthem album since "Bound to Break" in 1987! It is more than time to (re)discover this legend of the Japanese metal scene, who will share the stage of the forthcoming Loud Park Festival with several other monsters such as Heaven & Hell, Marilyn Manson, Blind Guardian, Saxon, Therion or Trivium on October 20th & 21st at the Saitama Super Arena in the suburb of Tokyo.
